Warning: This article will contain completely honest opinions about sports that may or may not offend you.
Coming from a small town of Washington, Indiana the only sports to get totally hype over was high school basketball and for me that wasn't a good enough option. Sure, I'd attend the games for the thrill of the cheer block and chant for my team but every opportunity I was given I'd take a lap around the top of the gym talking with friends. It was just me, and I'll admit I was never the crazy hatchet fan. Whenever I played volleyball I finally had something that I could get a little bit more competitive about, but that was probably the extent to my athletic/fan girl side. When it comes to professional sports baseball is about it, and the only time I think I've actually honestly enjoyed watching football was in the movie, Woodlawn.
I'm usually the only person going to Super Bowl parties just looking forward to the half-time shows, the girl at the baseball game who is singing all the chants but doesn't know the pitcher's name but, I'm also the girl that's standing on the edge of her chair as soon as the Olympic Games start, and yes I mean standing onthe edge of my chair, sitting is much too calm.
The Olympics offer something that is inspiring, exciting and, I mean, you're watching the best people in the world (literally). I'm not writing this to bash any high school or professional sport but when it comes to the Olympics they just completely captivate me in with their events and performances.
The art of the Olympics is you see true effort and dedication. Some of the events that they compete in are worth more than points but are merely recorded off of time and the distance managed in the time frame. When watching the USA Women's 8 team take off and row, row, row their boat, it amazed me how much energy and sacrifice they must go in with. In this specific race they were so far ahead, but they never let up and they finished strong. This proves the point they weren't just looking to win, but to set new records for themselves and pushing themselves beyond what the viewers, coaches and judges could expect.
Cheering on swimmers such as King, Meili and Phelps you just admire their endurance and fight to the finish. There's just something about being on the other side of the screen yelling out the 3 letters... U-S-A, U-S-A and to see them represent our country in a fair and excellent way-- because they truly are number 1 and don't just wiggle the finger, they actually earn it.
The reason I get so hype over the Olympics is because it inspires me to continue to challenge myself and work towards any dreams that anyone has told me are too farfetched.
Anyone else feel me? Or am I still one of the only Americans who doesn't get totally hype about Super Bowl other than the food or half-time show?
