I was watching the television, greatly existed to see what was about to come on. The vivid and vibrant atmosphere of the Olympic ceremony captivated me, watching the colorful Brazilian culture come to life in Rio de Janeiro; with its famous citizens showing off their grand accomplishments. Brazil's vibrant colors slowly faded as many athletes came forward in the stadium, proud to be representing their respective countries by showing their own cultures and styles.
Ah, the Olympics. The rare and beautiful privilege our world gets to experience every four years, whether it would be for the icy Winter Olympics or the fiery Summer Olympics. There is a various range of sports in both Olympics, such as swimming, gymnastics, skiing, bobsledding, and more exotic sports such as curling (an icy game similar to shuffleboard) and table tennis.
The Olympics were originally established around 76 B.C. in Ancient Greece as a tribute to the Olympian gods. The Olympics were held on the island of Olympia and included sports such as jumping, boxing, running, and wrestling (with much different rules than today). The ancient Olympic games lasted for twelve more centuries, until Emperor Theodosius banned it, claiming that it was apart of a "Pagan cult". The modern-day Olympic committee was established in 1894 by French Baron Pierre de Coubertin. He was interested in education, and he believed the best way have developed, educated minds was to have developed bodies as well. Coubertin believed the best way to have the public accept his theory was to bring back the Olympic games, because the original Olympics tested individuals in every way possible. The first Olympic games was held in 1896 in Athens, Greece. It was held in Greece because Coubertin wanted to bring the spirit from the old games into the modern games. (The Winter Olympics were not founded until 1924.) Believe it or not, the Olympics used to award medals to individuals representing the arts!
