In a world filled with endless awesome television sitcom teams, no combination quite adds up, in my opinion, to the perfection that is the tenants of loft 4D in "New Girl." Don’t get me wrong, I’ve watched "Friends" at least 30 times, and I never get tired of re-watching "Parks and Rec," but when I watch "New Girl," I have a hard time choosing a favorite character because they are all so wonderful in their own unique ways. Here is why being BFFs with each of these characters would be a dream come true:
Disclaimer: I haven’t watched the season with Megan Fox’s Reagan, so she’s not included here in my friendship dream team.
Coach.
Though initially we only get a few episodes with Coach in them, his return to the show in season 3 cemented my love for him. While he is closed off at first, wanting to preserve his image, he would be the kind of friend who once you put in the effort to get to know them, is one of the silliest people you’ll meet. In Coach, you get the best of both worlds: he’s strong, but also extremely sensitive. We see numerous instances of Coach’s cocky, competitive persona being broken down by a rejection from a girl or insecurity about his skills as a gym teacher. As long as you don't mind building back up his confidence when he's feeling down, you get to enjoy the benefits of hanging out with Coach at his best, i.e., baking brownies together while simultaneously watching a football game.
Schmidt.
Like Coach, Schmidt is more than meets the eye. Sure, he can be selfish and self-centered at times, but seeing how much effort he puts into celebrating his and Nick’s anniversaries as roommates is just one example of what a good friend he can be. As much as he may try to act like he is a god among mortals, we all know how much he craves praise and attention. Sure, Schmidt may be the most high-maintenance of the roommates, he is also the most dedicated and can always be relied on to make you laugh.
Winston.
How can you not love Winston? He is so full of quirks and is 100% his own person. What makes Winston so lovable is the childlike aspect about him. Between singing Wicked songs in his car and planning elaborate (albeit, dangerous) pranks, his imagination knows no limits. As we learn from Winston’s first appearance on the show when he helps Jess get her stuff back from her ex-boyfriend, no matter how much you drive him crazy, he will still be there to help you out. The only thing to keep in mind with Winston is that he is part of a packaged deal -- if you want to be BFFs with Winston, you have to accept being best friends with his cat, Furguson, as well. Sounds like a win-win situation to me!
Nick.
Nick is the friend that you go to for Netflix and junk food, which is why I know he and I would get along splendidly. He often tries to act like he doesn’t care, but when Nick allows himself to dream, he dreams big. Whether it’s creating a suit with Schmidt or wanting to hunt in the forest to provide Thanksgiving dinner, Nick’s mind is certainly a unique one. While he may need a friend who can support him in all his wacky endeavors, he will make it worthwhile by being a loyal, honest friend. Not one to sugar coat things, Nick is going to tell it to you like it is. Maybe he’s a little prone to anger at times, but when all is said and done, Nick is really just a big teddy bear who wants to see his friends happy.
Jess.
And, of course, the loft would not be complete without the goddess herself. Jess is the embodiment of a good friend. I like to think we’d have a great time crafting and randomly breaking out into song together. What makes Jess the best though, is that she always tries to take an interest in the things that make her friends happy and support them. Even if it means ending up in the hospital after eating a dead fish pulled from the river by Nick, Jess will go the extra mile to lift her friends’ spirits. Additionally, Jess is unapologetically herself. She is friendship goals because you know that no matter how weird or goofy you might think you are, Jess will take you in with open arms and be a weirdo right alongside you.
While each of these fantastic characters have their own traits that make them quality friendship material, the real magic happens when they’re all together. Therefore, it is my goal in life to find my real life Coach, Schmidt, Winston, Nick and Jess in hopes that we can hang out and play some True American.
