My mom always asks me why I watch such “trashy" shows like the Kardashians. The truth is, I never really had an answer besides it was interesting and I actually enjoyed watching their lives. But it is a weird concept to comprehend, to think I'm watching a family who is not even famous for a good reason, go through their daily lives. Well, truth is, whether we openly talk about it or not, most girls around my age are guilty of indulging their time watching shows like KUWTK. Not only that, but we talk about it a good amount, too. Whether it’s about Kim’s butt, Khloe’s ability to be a real one, or Kourtney’s relationship with Scott Disick, we all talk. Whether it is a positive controversy or a negative one, were all doing one thing: comparing ourselves. Although we may not realize it, that’s what we’re always doing when we have big stars like that going through our minds.
Think about it, people like the Kardashians keep us up to date of what’s considered “in” or “fashionable.” Where do you think the choker trend came from? Where do you think the Kylie lip trend started? People like the Kardashians are so involved in our daily thoughts and lives whether we notice it our not. We sit and judge the way Khloe went from being the “fat” Kardashian to the “fit” inspiration of 2016. We sit and talk about how Kim rose to fame by a sex tape, and how messed up it is but, frankly, at the same time were thoroughly impressed. It’s crazy how we can judge people so hard with only knowing their fame, but also how much it affects the way we judge each other.
The Kardashian’s basically started the trend of women being attractive if they have a slim waist and thicker legs. They start most trends, and when Khloe came out with her book about her body transformation, everyone respected her so much. This is something good that comes from the Kardashians. But there is not always good that comes out of the way girls compare ourselves to them. One of the most controversial topics is their bodies. No one believes their butts are real, and they're most likely not. But even though they're not, we still compare.
Well, what’s my point? I can tell you one thing; girls will never stop comparing ourselves to each other, let alone Kylie, Kendall, Khloe, Kim, or Kourtney. I can also tell you that our society will always be socially structured to make girls feel like they have to be better than they are. That’s sadly just how it is, even though we try to subside from it whether they are ads, commercials, or famous people who are questionably good looking. There will always be photoshop, there will always be portrayals of women in the media who make us feel like we aren’t good enough. It’s a hard deal to fight, considering social media will be prevalent in our lives for generations to come.
Therefore, my suggestion to every girl is not to stop watching these shows, or make sticky notes that tell you you’re beautiful in the morning, but just realize that the way our social structure is set up is messed up, and to not get too caught up in it all. It’s pointless, and you should love yourself the way you are. I won’t say anything too cheesy because that’s said enough by our parents, but just realize that you can only be the best you you can be. Life seems to be all about competition, which is in some ways a good thing. But in terms of bringing yourself down, just learn to accept who you are. I see way too many girls trying to be something they're not or be way too insecure about themselves. I’m not the most confident girl out there, and I have thoughts that I need to work on fixing, but I can sure as heck tell you that I’ve learned to not compare myself to other people. Because what’s the point? You’re not changing anytime soon, so just be you.
