Growing up in Michigan meant that I grew up surrounded by the Great Lakes—literally. Even though winters are cold, harsh, and never-ending, the summers are great. Here are ten reasons why the Great Lakes are the greatest place to spend the summer.
1. They're massive.
They do contain one-fifth of the world's fresh surface water.
2. Great scenery.
No words needed for this kind of beauty.
3. No salt, no sharks, no worries.
No need to worry about Jaws eating you while you're in fresh water.
4. Greatly refreshing.
Since the Great Lakes are up north, they can feel like they’re minus 12 degrees, which is actually amazing on a hot summer day.
5. Less crowds.
The Great Lakes are way less popular than most beaches on the ocean so you rarely have to fight people for a prime spot near the water.
6. Great beaches.
Whether you prefer white sand or rocky, the beaches of the Great Lakes can’t be beat.7. Boat days.
There’s nothing better than spending the whole day on the water.
8. Great water sports.
Tubing and waterskiing and paddle boarding, oh my!
9. Low maintenance.
The Great Lakes are basically giant pools -- except you never have to clean them and they never break down.10. They're great.
Well, of course they are! That's why they’re called the Great Lakes!
