The 75th annual Golden Globes was a historic night for all women. as the conversation of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and gender bias was brought into the spotlight. Containing a powerful group of over 200 women in Hollywood, the #TimesUp movement was created to honor and commend all women for their courage and impact in the entertainment industry.
All of the women figures present at the Golden Globes showed their support against the epidemic of sexual harassment in the industry by coordinating a blackout. By banding together and wearing all-black outfits, a statement for gender equality was made. This occasion was not to be mistaken as a fashion moment for women, yet a moment of solidarity for all to speak out and be heard.
Not only did all of the women dress in support of the #TimesUp movement, actresses chose to bring female advocates and activists as their guests, instead of a man. Delivering a strong message to all of those watching from home, a prevalent conversation on the red carpet was gender equality rather than the common "Who are you wearing?" question and response. Many insisted they were at the Golden Globes not due to their nominations, but to amplify the voices of all women.
As Oprah said, "I want all the girls watching here and now to know that a new day is on the horizon! And when that new day finally dawns it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say 'Me too' again."
Oprah's dynamic and influential speech was empowering for all women to fight together to change the way women are viewed and to enforce an equal power dynamic between men and women.
The Golden Globes has amplified the importance of change and the capabilities this movement has to reach everyone. It is an exciting time to be a women.
