Why The Daily Beast Should Fire Nico Hines

Because a half-assed apology is not enough

Why The Daily Beast Should Fire Nico Hines

I was initially hesitant to write another article about this incident, especially so soon. And then I realized, to hell with that. I’ve spent too much of my life being afraid to talk about this. I’m not letting another person bully my community into silence. So let’s talk about.

Let’s talk about how this “reporter” has gone MIA on Twitter since his gay-baiting, homophobic article was published. He hasn’t even issued an apology of any sort, instead hiding behind the transparent apology of a Republican editorial staff.

This is why I’m calling on The Daily Beast to #FireNicoHines. Because apparently hashtags are the only way we can get people’s attention nowadays.

If this publication (it’s a stretch for me to call it that) is actually sorry about the disgusting actions of a member of their staff, they need to prove it. Take a stand. Do something good for us to remember you by, instead of letting this stain be your reputation.

#FireNicoHines because it’s men like him who made me want to kill myself in middle school. It’s men like him who make me feel like some sort of spectacle when I hold my boyfriend’s hand in public.

#FireNicoHines because he is an example of why people don’t understand the problem with calling me their “gay best friend.” He is an example of people who think it’s acceptable to “love the sinner, hate the sin.” He is an example of the same thinking as Donald Trump saying he “loves the gay community” but thinks marriage is only between a man and a woman.

#FireNicoHines because men like him are the reason we have “safe spaces.” Men like him are the reason we use apps like Grindr and designated gay bars to find each other. Men like him are the reason “the closet” exists.

Now, is this in part a product of my pent-up anger at heteronormative society and how it has inhibited the development of LGBTQ people? Yes. Is Nico Hines in some ways taking the brunt of an issue that is not his fault alone? Yes. Does that mean we should take it easy on him or give him a pass on this? Nope. No way in hell.

If we can’t even fire a man who abuses his power of journalism to out gay athletes, how can we hope to hold entire publications accountable for their actions?

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.
