While scrolling through Tumblr as I do every night, I came across a vine of a young white woman rapping crazy words and profanities that caught me. Thinking she was just writing parody rhymes, I decided to do some digging and found that this girl was a rapper by the name of The Buttress. Unknowingly, I discovered a new culture and rap sound that I would soon be addicted to.
The Buttress is a young woman who is a rapper, beat creator and film maker. Hailing from New Jersey, she's not the typical female rapper, seeing that she doesn't try and appeal to the "popular" sound you usually hear on Hot 100. She doesn't need to use her body or easy beats to make great videos and great songs. Trust me: her videos will entrance you, at first wondering what you're watching, then loving every second of it.
This girl has great flows, making waves in the rap pool. Watching video after video, the themes of her raps and videos go from salem witch trial-y hangings, Cesarean Rome, and contemporary bedrooms. I never before have seen such a different style of rap, seeing that I really only listen to ATL trap and of course the mainstream stuff that comes on my Pandora. Directing every video herself, each video stars The Buttress. With swaying choreography, fake blood, and excerpts from the oldest movies, perfectly lip synced and to the beat, we can tell The Buttress' aesthetic is out of this world.
Her sound is different, obviously nothing you would hear on the radio. It reminded me of a dark, underground Iggy Azalea. Skimming through related videos on the right side of my screen, I come across other known rappers such as Tyler the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt, which in my opinion are under the same large umbrella of alternative rap. The Buttress has the rhythms and sick beats to ride with these known artists, and I hope that her name is associated with greatness. With this new sound and different culture of rap, I'm excited for this new era that The Buttress is ushering in.
