The #ActualSororityMove was started by the women of Sigma Kappa from Elon University going against the Total Sorority Move (TSM). These women promoting the Actual Sorority Move took pictures of themselves with a #ActualSororityMove sign, and captioned them with how being in a sorority doesn’t affect their future. They refuse to be a part of the typical stereotype believed to be set by Total Sorority Move. TSM wrote an article about their comments, saying the articles that Total Sorority Move posts are “humorous,” but we're not laughing. The ladies of Sigma Kappa disregarded the following points from Total Sorority move:
Because we’re involved in Greek life we go out every night and get wasted.
Sorry to break it to you, but we don’t all go out drinking every night. As Actual Sorority Move stated, “Since I’m in a sorority people assume I stay up all night partying BUT I’ve spent more late nights studying in this library that with fraternity boys #ActualSororityMove.” Finally someone said what I was thinking when reading some of theTotal Sorority Moves posts. School comes first; don’t assume that I drink every night of the week just because I’m in a sorority. I’m my own person, not the stereotype you assigned to me.
Sorority girls are supposed to be a size 0.
Diversity is key in any community. No one should have to change themselves to be in a sorority. A sorority is meant to be your home away from home, not somewhere that you will be judged.
Sorority girls are dumb and only go to college to get their Mrs. degree.
All Greeks are required to meet a certain GPA. I am not going to college to learn how to be a wife. I’m going to college to be able to provide for myself in the future. I don’t need to learn to rely on anyone but myself to ensure a great life. I don't need a Mr. to have a good life and be successful.
Sorority girls are self-absorbed and think they’re above everyone else.
Every sorority on every campus raises money for their philanthropies. We give so much money and time, not because we have to, but because our chapters philanthropies help us become better women. We’re learning how to lead and make a difference. One of my chapter’s philanthropies is Special Olympics. I get the opportunity to put someone else before myself and cheer them on. It’s so empowering and I have so much love for my sorority for giving me the opportunity to experience it.
Greek life is one of the best things I have ever experienced. The #ActualSororityMove is trending because women from sororities everywhere are getting fed up with the stereotypes. We’re more than what Total Sorority Move says we are. Every person and every sorority is different; don’t let the label “Greek” define us.
