The 2016 Election.
Better known in these parts as the “Oh, God. What did we do so bad to deserve this? I WANT OFF THIS FUCKING SCARY ROLLER COASTER 2016.”
That Tuesday, people drove out to the polls to vote for either: Hillary Clinton, an orange orangutan, or protest by voting third-party. Well, the people had spoken, and we finally had a winner!
Donald Trump, the answer to the question: “What if you mixed Kraft Easy-Cheese, carpet samplings and the personality of a bull in a glass house?” won the electoral vote by a razor-thin margin.
Some would say that the states that have historically gone Democratic: Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin flipping to the Republican side of the aisle decided it all. Meanwhile, Al Jazeera offered up this explanation:
Yes, the classic bait Trump and his ilk have clung to since both campaigns started what seems like 300 years ago: her email account.
Even throughout two rulings from the FBI in July and October of 2016 that explicitly said that though she was careless with the handling of classified info, she was cleared of any wrongdoing, Trump and his supporters were fervently denying it the same way your roommate denies eating the leftover pizza from last night. “Look, Greg. I reserved those last two slices for lunch today.
It’s only us two that live here. WHERE DID THEY GO YOU MONSTER!”
Emails weren’t the only thing being clung to as a reason. Trump supporters came out en masse to vote for the person that they thought represented the blue-collar proletariat that felt largely ignored by establishment leaders such as Clinton and Obama, where the swamp would be drained.
And they wanted to go back to the time where ‘political correctness’ didn’t run amok in today’s society.
Which seems reasonable, until you realize that their candidate took that to the extreme when he mocked the disabled, disrespected a gold star family, announced on that Access Hollywood bus with Billy Bush that he can ‘grab them by the pussy’ because he’s a star, his behavior during the debates.
Note that when they want things to go back to the way they were, they want to go back to 1950s living.
We know what that means.
Thankfully, all this met its reckoning with 2017 elections. Democrats won up and down the ballot in key states such as New Jersey and Virginia. Rep. Scott Taylor called it ‘a referendum on Trumpism’ and ‘divisive rhetoric’ Trump spewed in the last year that led to such a beat down by Democrats on Republicans.
This, hopefully, will lead to widespread reform of both the House and Senate come the 2018 midterms, and the 2020 elections.
