If I were to thank one band for contributing to the music I listen to today, it would be a Manchester-based band called The 1975. Five years after their debut album, I still fangirl a little bit when they release a new single. Especially with not one but TWO albums coming up over the course of this year, I wanted to celebrate by giving my favorite band some appreciation for what they have done to stay close to my heart. it wasn't for one night in December 2013 and their most popular song “Chocolate" played on a Pandora radio station, I don't know if I would have the same music taste today.
After that night, I added a “The 1975" radio station on Pandora and slowly learned their debut album, “The 1975." I outsmarted the system because I only liked songs by the band and nearly disliked all the songs that weren't from the album. That point from all of 2014, there were a few songs that stood out. These were the songs that helped me branch out and are still relevant. Starting with their song "Undo" and ending with their song "Love It If We Made It."
These two songs show massive development over what has happened over the span of their career. "Undo" is the song that puts anyone in their feelings about a situation they have no control over, whether that be with friendships, relationships, or other life hardships. In addition to the light beat and lead singer Matty Healy's delicate voice, it's hard not to get hooked on this song. Needless to say, it helped me through my teenage angst. Now that I'm nearing my 20's, I think the band's newly released single "Love It If We Made It" is the perfect song to end my teenage years and enter a new era, which is what The 1975 is trying to accomplish now.
What makes The 1975 so special to me is that their evolution of music and image consistently seem to impress me. Instead of the band talking about relationships and drug use, they discuss controversial issues today that need to be brought up, such as the overuse of technology and its lasting effects on relationships. One of their newly coined terms "Modernity Has Failed Us" is an issue that people recognize, but do not talk about. I am extremely excited for the next power move The 1975 makes and I can't wait to see what empowering music they make in the future.
