Taylor Swift was the artist of our generation. She was worshiped by parents and kids alike from the release of her first album in 2006, self titled “Taylor Swift” (shocker, I know). This means that for the last decade she has been a part of our life, and we’ve grown up listening to her. Even though she is generally looked at as the ideal, I don’t think she deserves this title. I know this may be an opinion people don’t agree with, but believe me, there is evidence to back up my dislike of Taylor Swift.
First, Taylor started her career as a humble country artist. I’ll admit it, these songs were catchy and I, too, enjoy sing-screaming the lyrics to “Our Song.” Taylor catapulted into fame and has only continued to grow from her roots. It’s clear that Taylor’s style has evolved away from country, and she now produces exclusively pop songs. Despite this, she continues to go to the Country Music Awards and actually receive awards. Taylor claims to have completely transitioned to pop music, but given the evidence, this just isn’t true. All I ask is that she picks a genre and sticks to it.
I usually describe Taylor Swift as the Nicholas Sparks of music. By this, I mean that she has a love story formula that is relatable and present in nearly all of her songs, similar to how Nicholas Sparks’s books are basically the same plot about love with different characters and scenery. When it comes down to it, her songs continue to be boring and predictable. She uses the same old idea of a break up and, quite frankly, it’s getting old.
If Taylor had a different spin on her numerous break ups, I probably wouldn’t be complaining. But the fact is, she doesn’t. I think Taylor is probably one of the whiniest artists out there — in fact, she might be one of the most openly whiny people in the world. If I have to hear one more simple, repetitive pop song by Taylor Swift about how a guy broke her heart, and how he’s such an awful person, I truly don’t know what I’ll do.
What was really the icing on the cake with my dislike of Taylor Swift was the recent 2016 Grammys. Taylor won album of the year, and it is extremely debatable if she deserves this honor. Many people were not only surprised, but also just disappointed. Kendrick Lamar put out an iconic album, “To Pimp A Butterfly”, that most people regard as the rightful album of the year. The truth is, that Taylor whines for a living and her complaining has gotten her way too far. Sorry, Taylor, but I think everyone's starting to catch on to your whiney ways.
