We all know that celebrities aren’t perfect human beings. They mess up, they break up, they give up — just like us normal folks. The only difference is that their every single move is monitored and scrutinized by millions of people. So, I like to give most celebrities the benefit of the doubt. Except for Taylor Swift. I’ve found that over the past 10 years of her fame, she’s gone from little town country sweetheart to boisterous relationship addict. I know what you’re thinking: “Oh, cut her some slack! She’s only human!” and I totally agree. But when you choose to live in the limelight — a decision that isn’t easy — then you have to live with the consequences. I didn’t say Taylor Swift is a horrible human being, because she’s not. But is she really someone we want our new generation of America to look up to?
1. She can’t seem to be single. Like at all.
We all know these kinds of people — the notorious dependepotomus. They can’t seem to even function as a regular human being without being attached to the hip to their significant other. Over the past few years, it seems that Swift hasn’t been single for more than a month at a time. Through this, she’s showing young girls that they’re not valid without having a man on their arm at all times. That’s not cool.
2. She’s still bashing her exes.
Yeah, we get it — no one likes their exes. But there’s a mature approach to breaking up; it’s called getting over it. There are clean break ups like Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber; they have nothing but love and respect for each other years after their relationship. And then there’s 26-year-old Taylor Swift on stage still dissing her ex Harry Styles for their short-lived and strange relationship. Get over yourself, dude.
3. She can’t seem to stay true to herself.
So are you country or pop? I’m confused. Her transition happened so fast that most of us were left dazed and confused when she was still getting CMA awards for albums that were completely non-country. It’s fine to change up your sound a little, but Swift’s songs went from old back country roads to New York penthouses. OK?
4. She’s still writing break up songs.
Dude, you’ve been writing break up songs for the past 10 years. We get it, guys are jerks. But then at the same time you seem to date so many?
5. She doesn’t use her social status for good.
You don’t have to be Mahatma Ghandi, but at least put your efforts and fame towards something that really matters. Be like Emma Watson or Natalie Portman and go back to college, or be like Leo Dicaprio and talk about global warming. Anything really.
While I don’t expect Taylor Swift to be a saint, I do expect her to grow up. Her “I hate boys” attitude has run its course, and it’s time to be an adult and set an example for the youth of America.
