Why Summer In College Isn't All It's Cracked Up To Be

After making it through two years of college, I've been able to compare summers before college to what summers are like during. I can say without a doubt that summer after a year of college, is not all that great. We spend nine months in the same environment, with the same people, doing the things we want, but when we come home everything's changed.

These are the reasons why I don't think summer is all it's cracked up to be.

You miss your friends

We make relationships with these people who become our best friends, family and lifelines. They've struggled, laughed, partied, and cried with you all year. Then all of a sudden it's summer and we're expected to go three months without seeing them. I don't know about anyone else, but I've been out of school for one week and I already miss all my college friends and I can't wait for them to come back.

All you do is work

The dreaded summer job. If you're lucky enough to not have to work during the school year, then you completely understand how awful it is to go from not having to work for months on end to having to get up every day and go to work. For those of us who have to work year round, nothing really changes. We work just as much, if not more than we did during the school year.

You gotta get back in shape

I can only speak for myself, but I know that finding time to exercise is rough sometimes. We get so busy with school, work, a social life, and so many other things that finding time to stay healthy are difficult, at least it was for me. So I, like I'm assuming many others, spend summer getting back into shape and making a plan to try and stay that way.

Rules

If you're moving back home to your parents, that means you've got to follow their rules again. That means giving up that little taste of freedom we had just a few weeks ago. But it's not the end of the world. It's nice to be back with the people that love and care about you enough to give you rules.

Overall, summer is the best time of the year. Sunshine, warm weather, barbecues, and fireworks. But there are so many times I wish I could enjoy all these things and still not give up what I've gained from a year in college.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
