Sorry, but your hometown can't hold a candle to the Gateway to the West.

Why St. Louis Is The Best In The Midwest

If you're from St. Louis, you know and love the familiar food and attractions. However, most of the country isn't aware of what some call "a hidden gem." If you need help proving to your friends that you're from the best city in the Midwest, look no further than these 10 reasons.

1. So many attractions are FREE!

The Zoo, the Art and History Museums, the Science Center, Forest Park, tours at the Budweiser Brewery and even some seats at The Muny, an outdoor amphitheater, are all free. A special property tax subsidizes the Zoo and Museum district for all to enjoy.

2. It's a baseball town.

Cardinals fans truly are the best fans in baseball, and the downtown area is filled with energy every game day. Not to mention the gorgeous and relatively new Busch Stadium.

3. I'm just going to leave this picture of Ted Drewes right here.

This picture needs no explanation. One of the best parts of St. Louis, hands down.

4. Playgrounds aren't just for kids.

The City Museum, located in downtown STL, features incredible climbing areas for kids and adults. They even serve alcohol and are open until 1 a.m.

5. St. Louis is home to America's tallest monument.

Tallest in the country. And you can't deny it, that skyline is breathtaking.

6. Hipsters are welcome, too!

STL isn't all history. The Loop is a neighborhood with funky and unique restaurants and stores, as well as a concert venue. Numerous celebrities have visited Blueberry Hill, a popular restaurant in the Loop.

7. We're known for our pizza.

It ain't called "the square beyond compare" for nothing. This paper-thin pizza beats Chicago-style any day of the week.

8. We have one of the best zoos in the country.

The St. Louis Zoo is renowned for being one of the best in the United States. The zoo is constantly adding new attractions and has a diverse collection of animals. Besides that, do I need to remind you that it's free?

9. Forest Park is a beautiful place to walk through.

Whether you're a tourist or you've been there a thousand times, you'll appreciate the beauty of such a large and beautiful green space in a city--Forest Park is larger than Central Park in New York City by 33 percent. You'll likely see several wedding parties there during your visit. It's also home to the Jewel Box, a stunning greenhouse (pictured on the right), and The Muny amphitheater.

10. To-die-for Italian food.

Visit The Hill, St. Louis' Italian neighborhood, for some of the best restaurants in the city. You can also taste a St. Louis delicacy, toasted ravioli. Yes, it's as good as it looks.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
