Why Spring In Wisconsin is the Absolute Worst

I could not have been happier when I turned on the news today to find out that winter was officially over. Immediately I was looking forward to thunderstorms and beautiful flowers blooming in my backyard. Slowly I began unpacking my shorts and T-shirts, getting ready for those beautiful spring days. I went to sleep that night with a smile on my face, ready for the beautiful warm day that awaited me.

Monday morning: I jump out of bed to get to my eight a.m class, check the weather on my phone and I couldn’t be more excited about the fact that it was supposed to be 55 degrees outside. Throwing on a pair of jeans and a light sweater, I headed off for the rest of my day. I spent as much time outside as I could and prayed that it would be like that for the rest of the week. Unfortunately, as most of us Wisconsinites know, there was no way in hell it was going to stay that way.

Being the hopeful person I am, I awoke the next morning expecting it to be 55 degrees and sunny outside just like the day before. With that being said, I’m sure you can imagine my surprise when I saw two inches of snow on the ground.

Now I can handle some snow, we survive what feels like 10 years of the frozen tundra every winter, but what gets to me about snow in spring is the fact that it goes away just as suddenly as it came. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want snow at the end of March either, but if it’s going to be here at least let us enjoy it.

The next few days are rainy, as expected. Sometimes there are thunderstorms, sometimes its freezing rain and sometimes its just a light sprinkle, but God forbid if it stays consistent. Spring weather in Wisconsin is definitely something that you will never be able to predict.

Another example of this bipolar season comes from the other day. It was a bit chilly outside and I had heard some rumors of possible snowfall (shocking, I know) but for some reason I didn’t think it would happen. As I was sitting inside looking out at the beautiful blue sky and the bright shining sun, a spontaneous blizzard appeared ruining the whole view.

You would think that this blizzard would have lasted a few hours or so, but sadly you would be wrong. This lovely surprise lasted maybe all of five minutes, but it did make its appearance several times throughout the day, never failing to surprise us.

I love this state more than anything but spring needs to relax. As much as I enjoy wearing a parka in the morning and changing into shorts in the afternoon, I think it would make our lives a lot easier if spring wouldn’t change seasons every five minutes.

But to you, my fellow cheese heads, make sure you are prepared for snow at least through May. Also, have your swimsuits out, maybe your shorts and tank tops, oh, and your sweatshirts, and definitely your winter coat.

Good luck, Wisconsin and may the odds be ever in your favor.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
