Why Spelman?

Spelman has changed my life, and will change yours, too.

Why Spelman?

It was Spring 2014, I was being accepted to various colleges and universities across the country. Some include University of Alabama, American University, St. Mary's College of California and the illustrious Spelman College. Most of these schools were out of state, which gave me the opportunity to explore and broaden my horizons. I knew at each college and university that my life would change.

However, no other college like Spelman College would have changed my life and allowed me to grow to become a better person.

At Spelman, I am a sister.

Whenever I am walking on campus to my next class or the cafeteria, I see such beautiful and amazing black women. We speak to each other, say hello, and address each other with mutual respect. We have an everlasting bond that lasts not only during our attendance at Spelman, but even after graduation. Whether it be applying for jobs, or needing help with landing the perfect internship, we always have each other's back.

At Spelman, I am Successful.

On campus, there are so many opportunities to get involved and standout on campus. Through Student Government Association to the Spelman College Glee Club, there are always ways that a woman can do something and enjoy the college experience. You can apply for an Executive Board position, where you can help lead the organization to success. While doing this, you can lead yourself to success where being involved in these organizations lead to jobs and internships. Being at Spelman, you have no choice but to be successful and destined for greatness.

At Spelman, I am Educated.

Although Spelman is an institution where you are obtaining a superb education, there is no other way to be educated beyond what the books teach than at this amazing institution. Whenever I am speaking to someone on a topic on African American History, I have realized that I am more educated than the average person on the history of the African Diaspora.

But that is just one example.

Spelman has produced the most black women to attend medical school than any other institution in the country because our education is entirely unique. Medical schools across the country recognize that by allowing my sisters to become some of the best doctors in the world.

At Spelman, I am Supported.

All of us want to succeed. Not only do we want to succeed, but we want each other to succeed. We support each other in our endeavors. We never want someone to fall so they can be our stepping stool to the top, we all want success so we can help each other make it. Competition is okay, but it is never to the point where we want each other to lose severely.

At Spelman, I am a Queen.

Some may call us Spelmanites, some may call us Spelman Women, but most refer to us as Queens. We are queens because we are powerful and successful in more ways than one. We stand out and dominate in every field and position that we are put in. There are no limits for us and there is no glass ceiling. Our crown is our knowledge of how to strive in this world independently and effectively.

So to my future Spelmanites, whether it be a little 6th grader with a small dream to attend or a newly accepted high school senior struggling to decide, I hope this helps foster your decision as to why Spelman is such an amazing college for black women. If you want to change the world, Spelman is the place to be.

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
