So, this week I have been heavy on social media like always
and honestly have been very disgusted with things that I’ve seen. I feel that a
lot of social media sites start setting heavier rules for people in the things
that they put or allow on social media. It can really be the death of someone,
literally. No one thinks about any of these things, until it’s too late, but in
actuality, no one can really define what ‘too late’ actually means.
Here are three things that have baffled me this week when it
comes to social media. I hope the sites that I mention take the time to read
this article and consider what I said.
1. Meme's and Social Media
Whenever something happens in the world, you can be very sure that a Meme will soon follow. I’m very appalled and disgusted by some of the memes that I see, and the sick humor that people find within them. Recently, I’ve seen meme’s surrounding the beating of a mentally disabled individual. It is just downright disgusting that someone would take something like that and make a joke out of it. No one thinks about the repercussions of their actions until it is right in their face.2. GoFundMe
Right now, I am running a GoFundMe so that I could get back into school. I have yet to reach my goal, but it appalls me when I see irrelevant GoFundMe’s being made as a joke or for some quick cash when there are people, like myself that actually need the money. Recently, I have seen a Betty White fan make a GoFundMe to be able to travel and keep her safe because 2016 was taking all of the actors and actresses. Now, some of you might find this funny or even endearing but people like me that actually have a need for resources do not. I have seen pages made for Beyoncé tickets and other minuscule things that some people have no need for in their daily lives. I feel that pages like these are the reasons why my page is not being met with its financial goal. Those that make pages for outlandish reasons have ruined it for the rest of us. I can only hope that the company that runs GoFundMe will strongly consider tightening up on it’s security and requiring more information when it comes to making a page.3. #ItsNotRapeIf
Now, I do not know much about this hashtag nor do I care to know. I have just seen it floating around Facebook and again, I thought it was disgusting. Why even create a hashtag that has such a bad connotation to it? Why are you trying to justify something so cruel? When I decided to look into it further, I saw that it originated with a twitter page that, from the looks of things, hasn’t been used since 2011. Unfortunately, it is still accessible via twitter, which I don’t think is appropriate. I hope it’s what it takes the proper actions to remove this page altogether, and though the people that made the page, may have been doing it as one of life’s sick jokes, I hope they are punished for attempting to even make this go viral.
Whatever the Internet is used for, it has become a
battleground, a moneymaker, and a killer. If you are heavy into social media
and the Internet, please watch what you post. If you are going to post
something beneficial, consider posting not at all. It is kind of like the saying
“if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Unfortunately,
when you’re behind a computer screen, that saying ceases, especially in this
day and age.
