Why Single People Shouldn't Be Sad On Valentine's Day

With February 14th approaching, I am hearing more and more of my friends beginning to complain about being single on Valentines Day. I, on the other hand, have never thought about Valentines Day as a sad day. Here are some reasons why you should turn that frown upside down this year and celebrate no matter what your relationship status is!

1. It's a day of love for everyone in your life

This mentality started with of my dad. Valentine's Day is his birthday, but nonetheless, every Valentines Day he would bring gifts home for my sister and me. He showered us in candy and cheesy cards and heart-eyed stuffed animals. I grew up believing that Valentine's Day was a day about love. What could be better than that? So pick up a box of candy for your best friend, your mom, or your little sister to show a little extra love.

2. The emergence of Galentine's Day

Galentines is a trend that was established by the one and only, Leslie Knope. Though she refers to the 13th instead of the 14th of February, why not celebrate your closest gal pals on a day devoted to love? There are a million fun things to do at a Galentines Day celebration, and there are even themed anti-Valentine's Day party ideas all over the internet.

3. It's a great excuse to watch Rom-Coms

Finally! A day where it is acceptable and even encouraged to watch a rom-com, a guilty pleasure for many ladies out there. I am a sucker for a movie that makes me cry from laughter, jealousy, and joy. There are hundreds of them out there, but I've listed a few of my favorites.

Ella Enchanted

16 Candles

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days*

A Cinderella Story

Bridget Jone's Diary*

4. Giving Valentine's Day cards

What was the best part of February in elementary and middle school? The mailboxes and foldable Valentine's Day cards that were distributed at class "themed parties." (November: Thanksgiving, December: Christmas, January: New Years, and February: Valentine's Day) I remember being filled with joy when I got to go into CVS or Target and pick out the coolest new box of Valentine's (and save the "best" ones for my crush and best friends) There was nothing better than the boxes that included candy, stickers, or even temporary tattoos. Good news! We don't need to leave the tradition of Valentine's Day Cards in the past. The internet is filled with printable ones, DIY's (if you're into that and capable) and even just great memes to tag someone in on Facebook. Cards are adorable, funny, and an easy way to make someone feel extra special.

5. Discounted candy on the 15th

This one is self-explanatory. If all else fails, we know that on the 15th, all of the extra themed candy will be 50% to 75% off in all drug stores. What's better than that?

You don't need to be in a relationship to have people to spoil! So chow down, cheer up, and spread a little extra love this year.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
