As we embark on the journey towards love, we often only seek the deep affection of the person of our choosing. We frequently describe them as our "other half" or our "whole world," making it all too easy to lose ourselves while falling for them. We engulf ourselves in the person we love and forget all about who we are as an individual, but more importantly, who we are in God. Choosing to "date" God before dating another person gives us a sense of belonging in the world and the perfect example of what unconditional love truly is.
"Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ." Galatians 10:1
In following Christ, we give the worries of the world to Him and choose to seek gratification and wholeness through Him. Though our significant others can make us feel as if everything we have ever wanted is coming true, the feeling of unity with God displays no comparison. The love of God is the only true unconditional love that we will have.
Choosing to love God first gives us an identity as a person. We are not "so-and-so's girlfriend" or "the girl who dates whatshisname". We do not have to give our identity up in order to fit a mold society expects us to conform to. In Christ, we have a purpose specifically picked out for us. There is no reason to try to please society when we please to one who truly matters.
Matthew 7 reads, "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."
Ultimately, building a strong relationship with God will bring the right person to us. If we build our house on the rock, we will have a strong foundation in the relationship with the person we love. Someone will fight the good fight, finish the race, and keep the faith with us. God is the way, the truth, and the life, so there is no way we can find the person we are meant to share the Word with, without the one who created it. If we run towards God, eventually someone will catch up and run along with us.
