Serving others is a wonderful and truly humbling opportunity that helps build well rounded character for those who participate. Service derives from a passion to help others. There are so many different forms of service out there and something for everyone to enjoy. The type of service you participate in should reflect what skills you have and what type of things you strongly care about. If you have a passion for animals, volunteer at a shelter. If you love the outdoors, do volunteer yard work for a family in need. If you are good at working with kids, volunteer at a school. There is something for everybody. Go out and get involved! It's so rewarding!
James 2: 14-17 says, "What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, 'Go in peace, be warmed and filled,' without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead."
Although works are not within themselves a part of salvation, this verse simply means that service is an essential part of authenticating your faith. Keep in mind, serving others is no easy task. It takes commitment, time, persistence, and sacrifice. In order to serve you must first humble yourself. When you serve, remember to fully take the focus off of yourself and completely focus on Jesus. Only through Him are you able to find the strength and energy to help those in need. Mark 10:45 says, "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life and a ransom for many." Therefore, I challenge you to humble yourself, passionately serve others, and grow in your faith. Are you up for the challenge?
