To begin, I would like to say that just because I support Black Lives Matter does not mean I am anti-police. I respect and honor those who put their lives on the line for our protection. I also believe there are people who take the power in the profession to a new level that was never meant to be achieved. I believe people kill people, guns don't kill people. I send my prayers and peaceful healing to those who have been affected by the shootings as victims and police officials.
As we have all read, watched, listened to and feared, we know too well what has happened. We've read the headlines. We've seen the news broadcasts. There's no denying that racism is still prevalent in our society because by the unfortunate and privileged words such as...
All Lives Matter.
Now before we continue, let's talk about privilege and what that means.
Privilege is when an individual or group of people have an advantage, benefit or opportunity that other people don't have. For example, statistically, white cisgender men are more likely to earn more than females of the same race and other races. Most often than not people do not know they have privilege because it is something we are born with. People who don't know they have privilege never think of events or situations that other people go through. People with privilege are higher up, and those who don't have it are lower.
We know what privilege is, Black Lives Matter and "All Lives Matter," so let's discuss why "All Lives Matter" perpetuates white privilege and hurts the BLM movement.
As a white women who is stable financially, receiving an education, has a supportive family with food on the table, clothes on my back and a roof over my head, I have realized that I have a lot of privilege. I fully understand and accept that I am in a place where I know I will never experience certain situations and battles.
In relation to the BLM, I don't have to worry about being killed by the cops over the color of my skin. I do not have to think of people fearing me because I am white. I will never experience racism of any sort in my life time. Other people can't say that. And by saying "All Lives Matter" means that white people are excluding the events that will never happen to them and ignoring the experiences that people have gone through. People continue to say on social media and in person, "I don't care what you are, all lives matter!"
Really? All lives matter? If all lives matter then why are people of color being killed for doing absolutely nothing and white people being protected? Explain that one to me.
BLM means that we must get rid of the stigma, stereotypes and fear we have over black lives; the lies that society has told us about these people. Innocent people are being killed by those who are supposed to protect us. BLM is not saying other lives don't matter, they have never said that. In this moment of time we need to put black lives first.
Answer these questions:
1. Have you ever been threatened because of the color of your skin?
2. Do you worry for your life every time you leave the house because people will think you are up to no good?
3. Do you fear that you won't be treated equally as others because of your skin color?
4. Do you experience discrimination because of your skin color?
If you said no to all of these, you do not have the right to say "All Lives Matter." You are unintentionally (or intentionally) fueling the hate towards someone who is not like you by saying that phrase. You are invalidating someone else's experience. You are silencing voices that demand and deserve to be hear in a time of help.
We hold white people, white males in particular, on a platform of protection. Look at rapist, Brock Turner, who was given three months in jail for raping an unconscious girl. Do we hear those officers who killed one of the many black people we have lost in jail or prison for a shot they shouldn't have fired? Yes, they were on duty, but it was theirchoice to make the shot. It was their choice to have their fear take over. It was their choice to let their anger speak.
There have been one too many people we have lost from the lack of trust and compassion we hold as individuals. The holidays, the birthdays, celebrations and miracles one too many people will not experience. The emptiness families will forever hold in their hearts. Please explain how that is okay.
Black Lives Matters is more than just a movement; it's a call for peace and acceptance. Racism should have ended years ago, but to my belief we fear what we are not. We are not at a moment of time to confirm that racism has ended in our history.
To those who might be reading this affected by the tragedies of recent events: please know you are not standing alone. Allies will fight for your freedom, acceptance and peace. You deserve to live as free as you would like to like everyone else. You deserve your life like everyone else. You do not deserve to experience discrimination or hate from anyone.
If you are one of those people who do not realize the dangers, fear and damage that has been happening in this community (our community), check your privilege. By failing to try to understand, you are demonstrating your white privilege. It is not your place to interject your unrealistic feelings of under-representation and being disrespected..
Wait a minute ... doesn't that sound familiar? People voicing their stories of experiencing under representation, exclusion and racism because of their skin color? Please, tell me how many deaths of white people by police have happened in 2016 alone compared to those who are black. Tell me how white people are experiencing racism. Tell me about something you claim to experience that doesn't even exist.
