Why You Are the Same As Caitlyn Jenner

Because we can all "be the change we wish to see in the world."

Why You Are the Same As Caitlyn Jenner

On June 2, 2015, Caitlyn Jenner shed her former identity as Olympian and high-profile celebrity Bruce Jenner and publicly introduced herself to the world. After creating a new Twitter account to share her thoughts, Caitlyn broke a world record by gaining 1 million followers in a matter of minutes (surpassing the previous record set by US President Barack Obama).

This fact both astounded me and made me think about the different ways that one person can influence the world a million times over. That little number, just one.

Caitlyn Jenner, one individual, brought transgender issues to the forefront of our culture and created open discussion about these issues in a way never seen before.

But I think we, the other people of the world, the people reading this post, forget something very important -- we are the same as the people whose faces dominate today's media. We are each one individual.

We forget that as one person, we have just as much ability to influence others as the "celebrities" we see in the media. Through personal connection, passion, and the confidence to pursue our ambitions we have the power to change the world. Just one person can influence the lives of so many, and this is a gift that I think we need to truly remember to take advantage of.

It is said that humanity is inherently selfish. I think this is okay, that it is natural: if we know ourselves better than anyone else, why would we not automatically think of ourselves first? But the trick to enriching the lives around us is to turn our selfishness into selflessness.

Find your strengths as an individual and figure out how to harness them to create a better world for those around you. Find what you care about and stand up for it. As one person, you have a voice. You have the ability to speak out about what is important to you, and your words do have a massive affect on those around you.

Speak out. Tell someone about a person or an issue you care about. If you have a problem with the way an aspect of society works, challenge it. Change cannot be made without the actions of individuals, and if you speak, people will listen and take your message to heart.

So, what do you have to say?

Bob's Burgers
Adult Swim

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.

Huffington Post

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
