Why Rush Week Is the Best, And Worst, Week Of The Year

Sorority recruitment is so worth is but so overwhelming.

Why Rush Week Is the Best, And Worst, Week Of The Year
Haley Cromer

People who aren't in greek life consider sorority girls as a breed of their own.

Which isn't really offensive since we do live up to a lot of the stereotypes given to us; yes we really do sing songs and hold hands in pictures and rep our sorority letters wherever we go, but that's not all we do. As a matter of fact, we're actually decent down to earth human beings who do normal people things to. Unfortunately, all of that kinda gets forgotten during formal recruitment as we regain our reputation as sorority zombies. Trust me though, even though we may look crazy it's all worth it in the end!

When potential new members stand outside our chapter's door our president greets them with a Colgate smile, hands behind her back and a scripted speech all within specific timing. It's weird. It's intimidating. We wish this could be taken more lightly but we're just following the rules from the sorority Gods. We will sing to you and the songs get creepier by the day, we don't really know why we do this but it's actually pretty fun for us to jump around until it's 100 degrees out and we've sung the same song 20 times that day. They are catchy though, I'll tell you that much.

Then we will introduce ourselves and talk in a high pitch voice, this isn't really a requirement it just comes naturally for some reason. Our sisters will come squat next to us and interrupt conversation, we make it seem so casual but it's really frightening and very rehearsed. We will have our full hair and makeup done, nails painted and sometimes even spray tans and teeth whitened and you'll probably be intimidated but we're definitely more intimidated by you.

We'll show you our house which will be spotless and you'll probably wonder if it is always so neat but we spent weeks getting it ready for you. It will be decked out in our chapter's letters and pictures of our sisters and you'll ask yourself if it's staged or if we always have that much fun. The answer is YES!!! That part is real! Our recruitment video probably looks acted out but surprisingly that's some of the realest footage you'll see during rush. Believe it or not the jumping and dancing around is completely genuine... again back to stereotypes, we actually do that.

On bid day it'll start to get real, you'll feel like it's Christmas and wonder if you're more nervous or excited and we won't know either. You'll get a glimpse of more genuine conversation and start to see our realness as the week goes on but bid day is as real as it gets. You'll be one of us now. All those creepy smiles and the intimidation of a roomful of girls singing weird songs to you and squatting by your side will finally be worth it! That's when you'll know that we're much more than just jumping and singing girls who walk around with their arms behind their back. The week you spent in the heat with 8 hour days, sweating and repeating your major over and over won't even seem that bad because you've found best friends for life.

eye roll

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"

While this question trend can get annoying, there are a couple of pros to having RBF.

Yify

Another day, another Elle Woods comment. Can’t us blondes get through the day without someone harping at us over the typical stereotypes about who we are? I never understood why a person was judged based upon the hair color they were born with, or the hair color they choose to have (unless you dye your hair blue like Kylie Jenner, I’m still trying to understand why that’s a trend). Nevertheless, as it should be assumed, not everyone is the same. Not all blondes like bright colors and Lilly Pulitzer, and not all blondes claim to identify with Marilyn Monroe. I think the best suggestion to give to people before they make such radical claims is to stop judging a book by its cover. Or in this case, stop judging a blonde by her hair color.

15 Things That Happen On Your Birthday

Do you have a small get-together or throw a big bash?

My birthday has never been my favorite holiday. I've found that I'm more excited to celebrate my friends' and family members' birthdays more than my own. I don't like being the center of attention, so I usually celebrate over dinner with a small group of family and friends. This way, I can enjoy myself naturally without feeling like I have to entertain everyone and make sure they are satisfied. In the past when I've had large parties, I was so nervous that people weren't perfectly content that I didn't enjoy myself at my own celebration.
