I decided to write this week's article on reverse sexism, not because any particular event has sparked my anger or need to write about it, it's just something I'm interested in discussing. As the title announces, I believe that reverse sexism is not the answer to ending female oppression, or sexism.
I should begin by saying that this article is my two cents on the matter and that's exactly all it is. I'm in no way saying I'm right and you're wrong and that your opinion doesn't matter. I just want to write about this subject for the sake of discussing it.
First, I need to explain my definitions of feminism and reverse sexism so that you can better understand where I'm coming from and why I believe what I do. To me, feminism is the belief held by women (and men) that men and women should be equal, in salary and the way women are treated in society, to specifically name situations. Reverse sexism means to oppress men and objectify them in similar ways that women are oppressed and objectified.
Now, some might say, "Oh, well I think men should be treated the way women have been treated. They should be objectified so they know what it feels like. It's happened to women long enough so it's only fair." This is the statement on which I base my opinion. According to my definition of feminism, men and women should be equal. I don't believe that feminism should be centered on degrading men, or lifting women above men. Therefore, objectifying men is not the answer. It's like fighting fire with fire; it won't change the issue as a whole.
I'm not here to discuss the presence, or lack thereof, reverse sexism. I'm saying that it is not the answer to making women equal to men in society. Bigger changes need to be made, and that doesn't include objectifying men.
