New year, new me, right? It's easy to sit and write a list of new years resolutions, goals you want to meet in the upcoming new year, or plans you need to fulfill during the year. However, it isn't all that beneficial. It's a common trend, especially nowadays, but that doesn't mean it actually works. Why wouldn't it, you may ask? Well, sit tight, here's some reasons why.
1. You shouldn't wait.
If it's something you really want to do, you shouldn't wait to get yourself into the spirits to do it. By doing that, you're already missing chances at fulfilling it by putting it off. Stalling and postponing things are some of the worst habits to have, and by waiting for that new year, you're doing just that.
2. Higher expectations = higher chance of a let down.
By putting that pressure on yourself, you're so much more likely to mess it up. You basically set yourself up for failure by putting all that pressure on you. It's easier to start small on small improvements during the year instead of setting one big goal to do every single day in the new year.
3. Ever heard of 'creatures of habit'?
As humans, we are creatures of habit. It's said that it takes twenty one days to make a habit, and five days to break it. It makes much more sense to start it as soon as possible, because on average, we'll break it three times before actually going a full twenty one days without disruption.
4. We let it take over.
We get so obsessive over these goals. Like, if you want to be healthier, you don't have to count every single macro you ingest. We tend to take it too far in the beginning because we think it'll make us stick with it, but there's a much higher chance of breaking it because you lose interest or confidence in yourself when you begin to stress or obsess over it.
If you want to change something about your life, you don't have to wait until a new year to do it. If you start tomorrow, it's still a start, and less likely to pressure you about how much longer you're 'free' until you start the new challenges. (Also, please don't take all the machines in the gym as your new years resolution, xoxo)
