Why Reading is So Great

The amazing thing that is reading.

Diving into a good book can have the best effect on a person. But I have noticed how young people are not reading as much as they once did. I hear stories from my Dad about how his favorite thing to do as a teenager was to stay up late and read a great book. For teenagers now, it’s all about Instagram and Twitter.

Don't get me wrong I love social media as well and I can get so addicted to my phone, but I really try and take the time to read. Reading any amount can help a person’s daily life in so many ways.

Reading a book can improve a person’s IQ and can enhance their knowledge whether it be vocabulary or just historical events. SAT scores can improve and writing ability can skyrocket. There are so many benefits to reading but I feel as though those benefits get masked by the idea that “books are boring.”

In school, a lot of the books kids read are usually really hard to understand and have hidden meanings and lessons which can sometimes take the fun out of reading. Personally, I hate the books that I have read in school because the detail that we discuss within the book can be boring and it can drag on for too long leaving me uninterested.

However, when I open up a Harry Potter novel or a Twilight novel, I am completely utterly engulfed in the story. Maybe those books are not the “best” books, but reading doesn't always have to be about how many pages or how complicated he story is written, it can be about going on an adventure and putting yourself into another world.

There are so many ways to get a hold of a good book. Personally, books are kind of expensive especially if I am only going to read it once or I am not sure if I am going to like the book, I do not want to spend $10-$25.

One tip would be to wait for the sale because usually all books go on sale at one time or another. Barnes and Nobles has great sales on new bestsellers and Amazon has pretty much all the books discounted in some way. My second tip would be to go to your local library. Honestly that is the best and cheapest way to get your hands on a good book.

Books are such amazing things and I think reading is something that everyone should do a little more.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
