I remember when I was little and I had my heart set on being a princess, but then I realized I loved animals and wanted to be a veterinarian. Then I knew I wanted to be a hairdresser because my sister and I would always play hairdresser and I knew that was what I liked to do. Then as I got into my junior year in high school, I realized I wanted something more.
I realized I had a special gift where I am always helping others get through their tough times. I was always willing to reach out to people in order to see if they were okay, if they needed someone to sit and listen to them. No one deserves to go through things alone, because at one point we’ve all felt that we were alone, as if we had no one to go to, and that is one of the worst feelings. Then I realized I should venture into the field of Psychology.
Then, after watching a lot of Criminal Minds, How to Get Away With Murder, Dexter, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, I finally realized what I would love to do. I found what I’m interested in. There are so many different fields in Psychology that I kept switching back and forth my senior year before going into college.
There’s sports psychology, clinical psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, and a lot more. I decided to study Psychology and Law. That was my final decision. I now attend Plymouth State University studying Psychology and Law and I could not be happier.
The fact that there is just so much to learn about Psychology is what fascinates me. I am always wanting to learn more about the mind, how we learn, why we behave the way we do, and why some people develop certain mental disorders. The nature versus nurture debate is always a fun topic to discuss in Psychology classes and the topic of Abnormal Psychology is always an intriguing one.
Being able to pursue a degree relative to something I want to learn more about and interests me, is what I was always looking for as a child. I wanted to find something that I was passionate about, something I would love to keep learning more and more about. Psychology is a very popular college degree, but there are so many branches of Psychology it depends on what each individual is passionate about.
I chose the Forensic, law side of Psychology because watching all of the crime shows really got me into wanting to learn more about what goes on in the minds of criminals. Why do people commit such hatred crimes? What mental state of mind are these people in when committing these crimes? How did these people develop such mental disorders? If you don’t know, Forensic Psychologists testify in court to assess the mental state of criminals and victims.
Finding my passion within the field of Psychology is what keeps me motivated because I know that one day I will be working in an environment in which I am passionate about. There is always room for learning and improvement, that is also why I chose Psychology – learning new things and being able to grasp onto the concepts is always rewarding.
I hope whoever is reading this has an idea of what they are passionate about, if not, you’ve got time, so no rush. To whoever is reading this, I hope maybe you too are interested in Psychology and share your passion for learning like I have. I wish you all the best of luck with whatever college degree you decide to pursue.
