My parents are unwavering Democrats. If anyone even talked to my dad at the dentist's office, then it wouldn't be a shock to them that I am too. I distinctly remember the time that I became involved in politics, when Barack Obama was elected. I was eleven years old, and I recall my father telling me to remember that moment, to observe every second, because it was history. From that moment on, I have studied politics and kept an up-to-date and informed opinion as a liberal American.
I am proud to belong to a party that is historically accepting. Not a single Democratic Justice voted against the legalization of gay marriage. The advocation for transgender rights has been paved by brave progressive liberals, and they are often the ones fighting for racial and gender rights as well. I will fight against racism, classism, sexism, homophobia, and all other types of discrimination. My political party is the most popular among minorities simply because it is the most accepting. This emphasis on equality is a vital aspect to politics for me personally, and I would relentlessly defend these typical Democratic beliefs. The emphasis on personal freedom will always ring true, and aids in the progression and further the movement of our nation.
I am proud of the caring nature of my party. I will never believe that human nature and emotion should be removed from politics. I will gladly tell anyone about my "radical" belief that every single person deserves food, shelter, and the fulfillment of basic needs. I find the trickle-down economic theory to be revolting, and do not believe that the poor should have to rely on the magnanimity of the rich. My party typically argues against the current distribution of wealth and advocates for larger tax cuts on the rich. We fight for livable wages, welfare for those who need it, and opportunity for social mobility in all classes. I am proud to not adhere to the "rich get richer" mindset.
I am proud to be in the company of so many other wonderful and inspiring Americans. Though he was not public about his political leanings, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a strong record of Democratic voting and was arguably one of the most inspiring leaders of modern history. President Obama and President Carter are both recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize, with the latter being extremely vocal in the quest for human rights and charity. Even those liberals who aren't famous, my friends and family, inspire me every day with their drive and compassion
I'm proud of my beliefs. I didn't exactly grow up in a place where it was always acceptable to say that. I'm proud that I learned to respect and even those who don't agree with me, even if they don't give me the same treatment. I'm proud that I learned to become secure enough in my beliefs that I feel comfortable sharing them, even in the face of opposition. I'm proud that my party has taught me to be brave. I'm proud to be liberal.
