Negativity is a constant in our everyday lives. Social media tells us everyday that we don't have as many followers as this other girl because she's prettier or has more money. People will constantly tear you down just to make themselves feel better.
Often times we just deal with it and move on. But we shouldn't have to "suck it up" or "have thick skin". We should be proud of ourselves and not feel the need to succumb to the negativity around us.
Social media influences our lives everyday. We have to get the perfect picture to garner the most likes and comments on Instagram. We draft tweets over and over again in hopes to write a tweet that's self-deprecating yet still funny enough to get retweets. All around us are people who are just trying to fit in with the social media norms yet are losing who they truly are.
Those sorority girls in their letters taking a selfie? Ask them if they would like you to take a picture of all of them together. See a girl rushing to class with her hair half done? She's trying her best and at least she's going to class. That boy who looks lonely eating by himself in the dining hall? Invite him to sit with you and/or your friends. See someone who looks good that day? Let them know.
These thoughts and small acts of kindness can change someone's day for the better. Don't ridicule them for being in a sorority or not wearing makeup or eating by themselves or looking good that day. Maybe they felt self-conscious and by you helping them, being a friend, and bringing positivity into their day, they're able to feel better about themselves.
In a world where negativity is lurking around every corner with people ready to "roast" you or unintentionally hurting your feelings, spreading a little love and positivity isn't a bad thing. When everyone can work together and spread love, the world becomes a better place. You may even find that you feel better about yourself as well.
So post what you want to post without worrying about keeping your "likes per picture" growing or creating a #relatable tweet. Who you are is amazing and people like you for you. Not who you pretend to be.
