Why Pain Can Sometimes Be A Good Thing

Why Pain Can Sometimes Be A Good Thing
Christy Nowak Pace

Pain is only temporary, the feeling will go away and strength will take it's place. Living with pain can be very difficult, but once you find a way to get through that pain, it makes you into a different person. Going through difficult times wears you down. There is no sugar coating it, it just plain and simple sucks, but it's the end result that is worth it.

Having to go through painful times is not what most people think of as a fun time, but you need to try and think of the good that can come of it. I know it is a lot easier said than done, but I have some examples.

Sometimes the pain you feel can be emotional pain that can come from loss then there is actual physical pain or something completely opposite. Pain comes from everywhere, and no one can tell you that you aren't feeling pain. As Hazel Grace from The Fault In Our Stars so blatantly put, "Pain demands to be felt." In my own experience, I have lost people very close to me, I have had to go through different struggles that life has thrown at me and there is absolutely nothing that I can do about it.

Friends will come and go in your life, but those friends that do stick around are the ones that will help you through those tough times. Sometimes family members will leave you, not by their own choice, or maybe it is, but when you survive that particular loss, you will realize it made you stronger.

I would say with time you will learn how to grieve, whether you loose 1 person or 10 people in your life, you will never learn. People show grief in many different ways, they try and fight it, but if you fight it, grief fights back harder. You might not understand it or want it in your life, but without grief you cannot move forward with your life. You will be stuck in the exact same spot, not being able to have wiggle room even. It is a scary thought, but you need to over power it.

There is also physical pain that exists. Everyone has felt it, whether it's the severity of a fatal car accident or a simple paper cut. Physical pain of course hurts a lot and sometimes you can help it and sometimes you can't. The good thing about physical pain is most of the time there is a medical solution. This type of pain, most people would prefer over emotional pain, I know that if this pain didn't last that long, I would rather it over emotional pain everyday.

Physical may damage your physical being, but emotional pain goes far beneath the service. The trick is, you need to know how to beat it. Know how to defend yourself against your inner demons. It's hard to do, but once you face your tragedies, there will always be a light at the end of the tunnel. You just have to get through the darkness.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
