Blizzard has it together. They hit it right with "World of Warcraft," "Hearthstone" and "Diablo." Even with the lackluster "Heroes of the Storm," no one can deny how consistently Blizzard releases solid, polished game content with all the Easter eggs you could ask for. That's all impressive, but only now have I actually hopped on the bandwagon and realized how good a Blizzard game can be. They covered their bases with a MOBA and an MMORPG, and now they've rocked the FPS world. "Overwatch" is taking over my life. Here's what's up with the near future of the game and the reasons it's such a great game.
New Hero Releases
Blizzard has already announced the upcoming release of Sombra, who is rumored to be a support sniper. This means that we can continue to expect the charm and balance of characters like we saw in "Team Fortress 2" as well as consistent releases of new content like we see in "League of Legends." Followers of these games know that because of this we will see some interesting meta in the near future. Also, a support sniper is one of the more innovative ideas I've heard of for a first-person shooter.
New Map Releases
While this is expected of any shooter game in ongoing development, Blizzard has hinted toward new maps that will challenge team composition by modifying the layouts of maps based on open versus closed environments. This is where "Team Fortress 2" lacked greatly, and to see a similar game marking new territory is exciting to say to the least.
Competitive Play with MMR
In a recent video release, Blizzard explained the aims of its development team for bringing competitive play to the "Overwatch" scene. We know for sure that the system for competitive play will function through matchmaking ratings that relate to player skill levels. This means that we will be getting the competitive high that we find in MOBAs and the instant gratification of typical FPS games combined into one. This has been announced for expected release in late June.
Responsive Development
With the all of the latest improvements to the game and the thorough feedback that the development team has provided to beta users and new players, I'm impressed and satisfied with the responsiveness of Blizzard’s team. The publicity and the openness of the development process has been refreshing.
Unlimited Ammo
Having unlimited ammo in an FPS is not unheard of, but it's worth saying that having it in "Overwatch" is a massively important, understated element of the game. Ammo is not fun. It's just a nuisance that distracts from gameplay and interesting interactions between players.
YouTube and Twitch.TV content
Any great game deserves a cult following of its top-rated and most entertaining players on the streaming platform of its user base’s choosing. "Overwatch" is no exception. I'm already following YouTube channels that are releasing useful content alongside hilarious commentary. There's no telling what kind of content we can expect to see in the future.
