Why OSU Is The School For Me

A Texan girl in an Oklahoma world.

Why OSU Is The School For Me

One thing that I have been asked multiple times while I have been on campus is why did I choose OSU? I'm from Texas and there are PLENTY of schools in the state that I could've gone to, but none of them were like OSU.

Of course, staying in state was my first choice because the only states I would even think of going to were Oklahoma and Louisiana. Also because it takes 3000 hours to get out of Texas... When I decided to put OSU on my list I thought about what I would major in. Originally, I was going to do fashion design but changed my major to sports media at orientation. OSU is one of the few schools in the US that have a degree program that is dedicated to sports media. That really made me more interested in the school and the program. I knew I wanted to go to a school that once I graduated I was for sure going to get a great job in my field because I will be prepared.

Another reason that I chose OSU was because of the proximity from my family. I'm four hours away from home, and that actually isn't too bad. My dad is originally from Oklahoma and I have quite a bit of family not too far from Stillwater. That was a big deal for me when choosing a school because heaven forbids something happens to me or if I needed something and my parents can't get to me in time. I knew that if I needed anything I could call my cousin in Seminole or my uncle in Mid West City, and they would be there for me. Any school I was thinking of applying to had to be within a two-hour radius of my family. Family Is important to me, so it played a vital role with me picking a school.

A huge factor in me picking to go to OSU was the campus. When I came for a visit August of my senior year, I instantly could see myself there on campus. When I went it was a Friday, and there were students out at the union talking, eating, and studying. I knew right there that I wanted to be one of those students.

Coming to OSU was the best decision I've ever made. Even though it's been three weeks, I'm having so much fun here! I can't wait to spend the next four years of my life here. Go Pokes!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
