Why Not Now?

"Never Stop Exploring"

5
Why Not Now?
Kaylee Hamby

Here recently I've become infatuated with the world. Going on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic changed my view of a lot that happens in my day to day life. I began finding myself wanting to take spontaneous trips or go hike a huge mountain. Out of habit, I immediately talked myself out of it. Thinking to myself, you don't have the money and who would even go with you. WHO CARES. I can come up with the money, and if no one wants to go then I'll go by myself.

My attitude has completely changed. "Never Stop Exploring" is the slogan for The North Face, and honestly it's a good one. Why as young people would we stop exploring this beautiful world? There is so much to see and so much to take in. There are hundreds of different cultures right at our fingertips that we will never unravel if we don't get off of our butts. You are never going to reach the full potential you were made for if you only see your little town. Middle Tennessee is great and all, but it doesn't have 500 ft water falls and whales jumping out of the water.

I don't care if you're 50, 100, or 10 years old. Stop wasting your time on wanting to do things. Stop saying, "oh it would be so fun if we did this." Well, go do it! Your gift can only go so far if you stay in one town. You have to travel and let your light shine in every place. Jesus commands us to make disciples of many nations. How are we supposed to do that if we never venture past our city limits. Better yet, how are we supposed to do that if we never leave the country.

At this point, your excuses may be, well what if I get stuck over seas. What if I get taken in Italy. What if I can't contact my family for a whole week. What if I get the ZIka Virus. OKAY, but what if you have the best time of your life? What if you realize God's purpose is for so much more than what you have been doing? What if you go and help so many people and your heart has never been so full of joy...

Start small. Go buy a fishing pole or an eno. Go to a hiking trail or to the greenway. Sit down, enjoy nature. When you fall in love, keep going because the adventures are endless and they are always worth it.

P.S. I took the cover photo on one of my adventures. If you would like to see more follow @kvhphotography on Instagram or follow me on Facebook.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
