Why I Am Not Afraid To Go Abroad After The Terrorist Attacks
Huff Post

Recently I was asked If I was scared for my upcoming trip abroad. Of course I started to explain all sorts of thing that I am nervous about — traveling on my own for the first time, being away from home for an extended period of time, and all sorts of fears that come along when any student is planning on studying in another country for any extended period of time. However what the person meant was If I afraid because of all the recent terrorist attacks. That was not even something that came across my mind when they asked the question. Personally I do not want to let the recent attacks that have happened in France and Belgium affect me from carrying on with my life, and having amazing adventures.

In my opinion if we let these attacks paralyze us we are letting the terrorists win. Don’t get me wrong, terrorist attacks are extremely frightening and sad. However we can not live our lives in fear. Tragedy can take place anywhere or anytime,it is something that we can not predict. If you wanted to protect yourself from all the bad things in the world you would be living in a bubble. Terrorists want to instill fear into people, and by not doing what you want to do and going where you want to go they are getting what they want.

Terrorist attacks have also happened right here in our own backyard. This doesn't mean I’m going to be afraid to go to New York City or Boston. Just as I wouldn’t be scared to take a trip to Paris right now if I had that opportunity. I want to have as many adventures and lead as full of a life as possible — and I don’t want fear to keep me from doing so.

So my answer is no — I have no fears of studying abroad. I can’t predict what is going to happen and don’t want to live a life of always thinking about the what if’s. I respect others opinions, but I personally think letting the tragedies that have happened this year is a shame.Through travel you gain so much new knowledge, life experiences, and memories. I don’t want to let anything stop me from gaining those valuable moments. Life is only so long, fear should not be what stops you from living it.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
