Why My Sister Is So Much More Than Just My Best Friend

A look at what it's like having an identical twin.

Why My Sister Is So Much More Than Just My Best Friend

There's no doubt that sometimes siblings are really close, but it's a proven fact that identical twins have one of the closest bonds compared to that of any other relationship.

I have an identical twin sister and she's so much more than just a sister to me. The identical twin bond is closer than that of fraternal twins, any ordinary siblings, a child and a parent, or even a married couple. This might seem strange or difficult to understand, but when you're a twin... You just know.

You have a special connection. It's not like we know what the other is thinking or any other twin stereotype like that, but there are just prominent things that make it very special. For example, when my sister is sad I'm automatically sad, when we are taking the same test I know when she doesn't know an answer, and even when she gets a bad grade and I get a good grade I feel so much more sorry for her than I feel happy for myself. I know it must be hard for you to understand, but I'll try my best to help you comprehend why we are so close.

For starters, we share the same DNA which as a result makes you have many commonalities besides just looking the same. We have always had many common interests-- we both love to dance, we both love the same foods, and we have the same music taste. Those types of things always gave us something to enjoy together.

We grew up under the same roof, exposed to the same things at the same times. Unlike siblings of varying ages, we accomplished all the big steps in our lives together. Together we were saying our first word, taking our first steps, celebrating birthdays, graduating high school, and so much more. Through all that, she was always there by my side and I know she will continue to be.

When someone is there with you every step of the way they become a part of you as well as become your biggest supporter.

We both put each other first all the time, and I don’t think many people can say the same. It was always hard for us to discover our own self-identity because of our relationship, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

I used to always tell people that we are more than just twins, sisters, and best friends; we are eachother’s favorite person.

I know that she’ll always be there for me in a way that I know no one else will.

This ended up being pretty short and probably not as helpful at understanding as I had hoped, but it’s hard to describe when you can’t even understand it yourself sometimes. Maybe try asking a pair of identical twins you know and see if they can describe it to you. I’m certain the majority will have a difficult time trying to put into words exactly how close they truly are.

I’ll leave you with this...

It’s a no-brainer who my maid-of-honor is going to be.

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?
