Why My Guy Friends Are Important To Me

Sometimes you need a break from the girls

Why My Guy Friends Are Important To Me
Courtney Shapiro

Since we were young, it's been ingrained in our heads that girls should be best friends with girls and guys should be best friends with guys. Obviously things have changed since then because people can be friends with whoever they want. I love having so many strong friendships with both guys and girls and it's important to me have a variety. I love spending time gossiping and watching sappy movies with my girlfriends more than anything, but sitting and laughing with my guy friends makes me just as happy.

My guy friends are extremely important to me. I can easily talk to them about anything without having to worry about being judged. I can honestly say I talk to them just about as much as I talk to my girlfriends. They know how to laugh with me, but also know when I need them to be serious.

I also know I can definitely be myself around them. I never have to feel self conscious about how much food I eat or how I look because they don't care about that stuff. And plus I know they'll eat way more than I will anyway. I can hangout with them with no makeup, and sweatpants and I know they'll still like me.

Besides venting about my problems, I know my guy friends can give me great advice. While constantly making me laugh, somewhere in the midst of things, they always know the right things to say. They'll tell me if a guy is interested, if he's right for me or if he just a straight up asshole. My guy friends also give me advice about stress, my girlfriends, my family and pretty much anything else. It's great because I know they have my best interests in mind.

I know that I have endless support system from any of my friends whether guys or girls. My guy friends also give the best hugs. My bad days are always easier when I spend time with my guy friends. They are shoulders to lean on and people I can truly rely on. They don't cause drama and are down to be stupid and silly at any time. My guy friends are also always ready to try new things. I've experienced so many new food, cultural, and exciting opportunities through my guy friends because they'll always take a trip with me. They put up with my quirks. I'm weird, come on who isn't, but no matter what they want to hang out with me anyway.

I'm not saying my girlfriends don't get me or that I don't love spending my time with them because I do,but it's nice to have my guy friends around too. I appreciate the times I die of laughter because of something one of them said. They are full of stupid jokes, constant teasing, and amazing hugs and advice. I wouldn't trade the relationships i have with my guy friends for anything. Thanks for sticking by me. I hope you know how much you all me to me!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
