Why My Cousins Are the Best

My cousins are some of the best people in my life.

Looking back at my childhood, there a ton of memories that will be forever engraved in my brain. Some of these memories included my brother or childhood friends, but some of the best were the ones that were with my cousins. Here are a few reasons why hanging with my cousins was some of the best days:

1. Their Energy

All of my first cousins were younger than me growing up. Because of this, they are always super energetic and ready to take on any task at hand. I remember days where I didn't feel like doing anything, but somehow they always convinced me to join in on their crazy adventures.

2. They're Funny

I can laugh all day, but my little cousins make me laugh every time I'm with them and it's different from laughing with friends. They know all the jokes about all of your relatives and do great impressions. They tell the craziest stories!

3. They're Happy

Besides the early stages when they were all wearing pull-ups, there were very few times when they were seen in a bad mood. My cousins are always happy when I see them. When we were younger it always brought a smile to my face to see them excited to see me when I came over because I felt the same way about seeing them.

4. The Sleepovers

Having sleepovers with cousins is totally different from sleepovers with friends. I didn't get to see my cousins that much, so we always stayed up a little late and giggled until my uncle told us to go to sleep. We would put on dance routines and sing, which was so funny thinking about it now.

5. The Younger Ones

It's also cool being the older cousin because I get to see my little cousins who are just starting school grow up. Of course, I don't get to hang out with them as much or have sleepovers, but it's amazing to see them go through different stages of their life and grow into such sweet individuals.

6. The Older Ones

One of the best memories was gaining older cousins. It was cool to no longer be the youngest cousin. They would play with all of us cousins and we loved it so much.

7. Growing Up

If there is one thing I love most about my cousins, young or old, is how we're going to get to watch each other grow up. I know each and every one of them are going to do amazing things and I love them all so much.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
