While the purpose of attending college is to further one's education and learn the skills needed to be successful in the world, education has not been my biggest takeaway. I've learned more than I can explain and I'm still learning, but I cannot express the life lessons that I have learned outside the classroom.
1. Friendships
The relationships you build in college will last far beyond your college years. There's something about enduring tough classes, bonding with people in the same stage of life, and supporting each other when you're away from your family that make certain people stay in your life. Rest in the comfort that the people you invest in today will be worth your time in the future.
2. Responsibility
You are now responsible for your own body, education, lifestyle, decisions, etc. College can't teach you how to do laundry or what people to hang out with or even what life choices are good or bad. Luckily, the people you allow to influence your life can support you...that can be a blessing or a curse.
3. Identity
Your college classes can't teach you who you are, only strengthen what you become during your time here. You decide how you want to be known and what you want people to remember about you. The lifestyle you choose in college is hard to change once it has become second nature. You become the person your environment makes you, so be careful where you spend your time and who you allow to be a part of you life.
College is truly about stretching yourself as a person. When you reflect on your four-year experience, remember that your diploma is not the first thing you'll look back on.
