Last Sunday, another unthinkable act occurred on American grounds; in Orlando, Florida, an armed man entered a gay night club, the Pulse, and shot over 100 people. Fifty innocent lives were taken and the rest of the victims were left wounded. Just like the other shootings and horrendous acts that have happened in America in our digital generation, numerous articles and postings were generated, detailing the situation. Like any other American citizen, I was keeping up with them, curious to find out more information. I couldn't help but notice the plethora of controversial comments left on the differing articles, regarding the religion of the shooter, Omar Mateen.
Mateen, an American citizen, grew up with his parents from Afghanistan, according to The New York Times. Because of his descent, many Americans feel that the Muslim religion is to blame for the attack.
Though rumors have circulated that Mateen had declared his allegiance to the Islamic State, Mateen's father told NBC news that "this has nothing to do with religion." A law enforcement official also told NBC news that he was not in touch with any terrorists about this act at all.
Of course, the entire situation is hard to comprehend, leaving many people to look to a bigger source to blame, such as the entire Islam religion. Mass shootings like these have very rarely occurred with a Muslim extremist behind the trigger.
There is no one to blame in this situation but Mateen himself. It's hard to understand why someone would ever think about committing such a horrible crime, let alone actually go through with it. But it's not the fault of the Muslim community. Bigger issues surrounding the shooting are how easily accessible deadly weapons are to American citizens (since Mateen reportedly legally purchased them) and the mental health problems so many shooters seem to have.
At the end of the day, there are no words to describe this situation, and no one truly to blame but the shooter himself for committing this act. But, the Muslim community is one that should be left alone, and other issues should be focused on to make sure that something like this does not happen again. The tragedy against one group, the LGBT community, should not lead to even more prejudice and discrimination against another, as it has for many Muslims.
