When people speak of the best Disney movies, you often hear "Lion King," "Frozen," or "Moana." However, I'm here to tell you why "Mulan" deserves to be recognized as one of the top Disney movies made. Read through the article and I'll make a fan out of you! (If you didn't get that reference... sorry not sorry)
1. Defying Stereotypes
From the get go, Mulan already defied the stereotype of a typical Chinese girl during this era. She is seen as tomboyish; Riding horses and not caring about her looks. She even speaks out against her Father, which is definitely not common to be seen during this time period. Since the beginning of the movie, she proves she's a boss.
2. Her Sidekicks
Let us not forget the legendary sidekicks Mulan has had through the movie. Mushu, Lucky Cricket, and her horse, Khan. Mushu was the goofy sidekick who often came up with unconventional ideas to help Mulan conquer her obstacles throughout the movie. Let's not forget their constant comedic relief as well.
3. Mulan's Bravery
Ok, Mulan replaced her previous war hero and injured father to go to the army to fight for the emperor. She ran away from home and cut her long, girly hair. She endures weeks of harsh training with men and didn't regret it a bit. She was the Hero of battle in many instances. She didn't blink in the presence of challenge and she embraced everything that came towards her, and she did it with honor.
4. Captain Shang
The Captain of the Army and the son of the General, Li Shang. He puts up a headstrong and serious front, but he can also be quite goofy himself. He notices Mulan's weakness in the beginning but his criticism only made her stronger. Throughout the training, the two became best friends and at the end of the movie series, husband and wife. He demonstrates great leadership, turning a bunch of sub par men into a bunch of well-trained soldiers. He also shows his capability of self-sacrifice and bravery. In the end, he didn't take any credit for what Mulan did and was one of her biggest supporters! But let's not forget his very important training scene. *cue iconic song Make A Man Out Of You*
5. Girl Power
Mulan didn't need anyone to come save her. She had a creative mind and constantly showed her prowess throughout the movie. During many instances, SHE was the one who saved all the guys. In the end, the Emperor and all of China all bowed to her. Mulan instantly became an icon for all young girls (which can be seen in Mulan 2) to go against the norm and become a strong and capable woman. #GirlBoss
