You Might Think You Know Them, But You're Probably Wrong

Why Most People Are Wrong About The Kardashians

Whether you’ve seen them on television, the cover of vogue, or perhaps an illegally downloaded pornography tape (shame on you), we’re all familiar with the infamous Kardashian family. With a 9 year running television show, along with 5 spinoff shows (for those who just can’t get enough), these girls have gone farther than most people would ever dream of going. Although many people think that these women are on top of the world, the truth is that they constantly face accusations of being materialistic, selfish, lazy, and vapid. In reality, despite the hardships they face, the Kardashians are exemplary role models who show an audience what true compassion, diligence, and thoughtfulness looks like.

While it seems like this tight-knit family has it easy (spontaneous trips to the Bahamas, owning private Jets, having millions of dollars at their dispense), we should all consider that they each have their own struggles, just like us. For example, let’s not forget the incident in 2011 when Kim unfortunately lost her 75 thousand dollar diamond earrings to the unforgiving oceans of Bora Bora. Speaking of tragedies, just last year, around the time when the earthquake in Nepal killed thousands and left survivors homeless and hungry, poor Rob suffered from an embarrassing weight gain. Talk about a crisis! And how can we focus on the unrest in Syria with ISIL murdering thousands of innocent people, when Black Chyna just won’t let up on cyber-mocking Kylie? Though each person in the Kardashian Klan deals with their fair share of suffering, they don’t let it beat them; in fact, they use these experiences to give them perspective and empathy towards people with less advantages.

Critics might think that the Kardashians care little about anything besides themselves and their money, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Do haters have any idea that once in 2007 Kim, Kourtney, and Khloe helped a homeless guy move his residence away from the front of their store? Do they know that Kim gives away handfuls of clothing to underprivileged Ebay auctioners? I think not. With all the charity work these sisters do, it seems as if compassion is their main focus. However, the only thing greater than their passion for giving, is their drive to work hard in their respective careers.

As if letting people film you isn’t a job enough, the family of 6-ish are always busy with projects, photoshoots, projects, and photoshoots. For instance, Kim, an entrepreneur and creator of “Kim Kardashian: Hollywood” worked for tens of hours to find a team of video game designers to (co)create her game. And while Kim slaves away in the work force, Khloe slaves away at the gym. A totally different person from her chubby 2011 self, Khloe now works out every day. And how could we forget Kourtney, the full-time mom? It’s hard to think that she can take care of 3 kids at the same time, with only the help of a few paid nannies. Through each of their many accomplishments, we learn that hard work is a virtue. This, along with many other themes, is why the Kardashian family is full of incredible role models.

With the intention of always having a thoughtful message, the Kardashians stay true to their beliefs and morals. Each member has something that we can all learn from. There’s Kris, who reminds us that there are moms out there who still micro- manage their 35 year old children. There’s Kim, who teaches us that sexualizing oneself is empowering, as long as you’re married to an established rapper. Kylie, who shows us that you can be confident in the plastic surgery you choose to get. Caitlin, who informs us that you can be transgender yet still support a presidential candidate who does not agree with LGBTQ rights. It may not seem like much, but an hour long peek into the lives of this elite family can provide us with much more knowledge than we might think. And with the world in utter chaos, we could all use a bit of perspective.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
