Millennials. What is the first word that comes to mind? I am sure words such as “entitled” or “whiners” are some of them. Instead of focusing on the so called “negatives” of the millennial generation, let’s look at the positives. Millennials are known to be the most open minded generation and are known to include everyone no matter their ethnicity, religion, gender orientation, etc. We are known to give everyone a fair chance no matter who they are. Millennials are also the most educated generation in American history. More young people are seeking degrees and furthering their education. Also, millennials do not smoke and drink as much as generations before them, which is a significant health benefit.
Now let’s talk about the term “safe space." We often hear about millennials needing these “safe spaces” but what does that mean? According to safespacenetwork a “safe space” is defines as a “a place where anyone can relax and be able to fully express, without fear of being made to feel uncomfortable, unwelcome, or unsafe on account of biological sex, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, cultural background, religious affiliation, age, or physical or mental ability.” Generations before us are using the term in a negative way. My question is, why is this a negative thing? How is there any way you can turn the term “safe space” into a negative connotation? By making sure that we want everyone to be included and felt welcome, that somehow is a bad thing? As a millennial myself, I believe that my generation is truly the generation of kindness and compassion, and it will continue to stay that way.
Another thing I want to touch on is the topic on how millennials are always on their phone and how they are out of teach with reality because of it. I think this is 100% false. I believe that millennials are the most in touch with reality than other generations. Why? Well because we can access information faster than anyone before us. Being able to access information like news, social media, and other media platforms makes us the most informed generation in modern history; it gives us the ability to be informed on the world around us, as the news happen.
Yes, I do realize that millennials are known to be “entitled” and many other negative words that previous generations throw at us. What they need to realize is that we are the future, our ideals and morals are what are going to be passed on and that the future generations will adapt the new “norms” that we established. Our generation has been a game changer in our country, and we will continue to be one in the future.
