Why Mental Health Matters

"You were never created to feel depressed, unwanted, alone or ashamed. You were created to love and to be loved, and to feel that you are worthy and are valuable."

Why Mental Health Matters

A lot of the time mental health is something that is overlooked because we are just supposed to shove down our feelings and not worry about them. This is something that I'm sure many are dealing with. We are told that our problems are that big, and there is always someone else out there who has it worse. No matter what we do, we can't let someone else know that what we are dealing with is killing us inside. So, we keep on bottling it up and hope that it doesn't just explode one day.

We live in a world where mental health is something that you don't talk about. We think that just because we can't see someone suffering on the outside that they aren't actually hurting. The problem with this is that we losing many people to issues that they are battling on the inside. More and more people are starting to develop anxiety, depression and many other mental health issues, and we keep overlooking them.

Mental health has been a pretty taboo subject for a long time, and that's the problem. Sometimes when you're on social media you'll see someone who is yet another victim, and then you might read about it and then just kind of forget about it. The problem is, this is the kind of thing that shouldn't be happening. We need to make more people aware of mental health and how it can really affect someone. It might be from the stress of school, family, or even social life that might just push them over the edge. We need to talk about this subject more even if it is one that is uncomfortable. We should't be hearing about all the kids who are too stressed to know how to function anymore.

Making sure that you don't have unhealthy mental health is super important. And, I do think that it's something that should be touched upon in schools. In health, if your school even offers if they might just glance over it. Tell you a couple ways to manage your mental health and that's it. Well, they need to do more. Mental health needs to be talked about way more, and we shouldn't only be hearing about it when we lose someone.

We need to change the way that society is looking at things. Just because you might not have everything in place right now. We need to stop judging people so hard, and not worry if we make a mistake or two along the way. It's OK, and in the end you'll be just fine.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
