For as long as I can remember, mathematics has been my favorite subject. This being something that I have voiced to many people before, I know that half of people who read this will immediately question why I willingly want to learn math. A quarter of people who read this will admit that they are alright at math, but do not enjoy it while the last quarter of people who read this will instantaneously express a great sorrow because they feel it is a curse to actually take pleasure in doing math.
Whenever I say that I am pursuing a mathematics degree, people assume that I am smarter than them simply because I like math. This could not be farther than the truth. The only difference between me and the next person is that I have the desire to learn math, not a better capability of learning it.
So...why math?
First of all, we need math for basically everything in life. From counting simple things, adding up bills, calculating costs of desired items, to taxes, math is extremely useful in a practical sense. Because it is so useful, why not embrace its beauty and power?
Secondly, math can be fun! There are a significant amount of methods to learn all of the diverse aspects of mathematics. There is nothing like struggling through a difficult problem and eventually wrapping your brain around how to solve it!
Another wonderful characteristic of math is that it has so many different areas to study. If you do not enjoy learning about taxes or accounting, you can spend some time in three dimensional geometry or in vector calculus. There are so many areas to ponder.
To sum it all up {pun very much intended}, math is extremely diverse and useful; therefore, I suggest keeping an open mind when it comes to learning math. Don't immediately dismiss the subject if you struggle with understanding it; patience is the key to learning anything and will get you far. So stay curious and go do some math!
