When the world begs for Black Widow action figures and the media continually white washes roles, it is important to call on representation. However, when we don't get representation we must create our own; we must become our own media. As a comic book fan and writer, I resorted to creating my own heroes that represented the issues.
I made Golden Girl, a young bisexual aspiring actress with mental illness who runs away from her abusive home to Hollywood and becomes a star. Her superpowers are to shoot liquid gold from her hands which hardens on contact. She faces issues such as sexual assault, sexism, and prejudice, which are real issues in the world and need representation in the media. The character gives a voice to young girls who face the issues she faces in the world and is a hero for them.
Because I'm no Picasso, I've yet to illustrate and create the comic strip or upload it online. But those more talented than me can. There is no reason not to create your own media that represents the issues you want to see while also demanding major conglomerates(What are you using that word to convey? Seems a bit frivolous) to create representation. If we make and consume our own media on a mass scale, whether that be our own short films, stories, or even comic books, mass media will take notice and our demand will coerce the creation of a supply to satisfy and soon we will see our own selves represented in the media.
