I love going to see Broadway shows, but Wicked will forever be my favorite. The story is a prequel to the classic movie, The Wizard of Oz. Wicked is the story of how the Wicked Witch of the West, became the Wicked Witch of the West. At the time I’m writing this article, I’ve seen Wicked on Broadway six times, and counting. Here’s 4 reasons why I love Wicked.
1. Elphaba
Elphaba is the definition of the underdog. From the moment she was born, she was different because she was born with her green skin. Throughout the entire show, everyone was against her. As soon as things start going right for her, they take a horrible turn. The audience can’t help but root for her and want to see her have happiness. Maybe because we can see a little of ourselves within Elphaba.
2. Glinda
Without a doubt, Glinda is by far my favorite character within the show. Even though, Elphaba’s choices are pivotal to the narrative and plot, Glinda has the most character development throughout the whole show. In the beginning, she starts as very selfish, but as the story goes on, she develops into someone who cares for her best friend and learns to truly love someone besides herself. Even though she achieves her dream, popularity and fame, she still has to question herself when her dreams came true. “Getting your dreams it’s strange but it seems, a little, well, complicated. There’s a kind of sort of… cost. Yes a couple of things get… lost. There are bridges you cross you didn’t know you crossed, until you crossed. Happy is what happens when your dreams come true. Well, isn’t it? Happy is what happens when your dreams come true.”
3. The Music
From the classics like Defying Gravity and Popular to the more underrated ones like I’m Not That Girl and What Is This Feeling, all of the songs are fantastic. There’s not one song that I dislike off the soundtrack. One of my favorite things to do is to sing the soundtrack at the top of my lungs with my best friend.
4. The Messages
There are many messages to learn from this meaningful show. “Always be yourself” “Stand by your beliefs” and many other important messages.
