Why I Love The City That Never Sleeps
Annika Gordon

I've heard a lot of good things about New York City, but I also often hear that New Yorkers think the city is overrated. However, as an island gal, coming to the city is like a dream come true. You see, I’ve been surrounded by palm trees, beaches, and warm weather my whole life. The cold weather, tall buildings, sound of cars honking, people chattering at every corner, sight of cafes everywhere, and the best monuments and sights never cease to disappoint me. No matter how many times I come back, I'm forever in awe by the city’s beauty and what it has to offer.

New York City is fairly easy to navigate.

Another thing I love is how easy it is to get around. The streets and avenues are easy to navigate, and the subways are easy to find. The first time I visited, I was alone and had no idea to use the subways, so I did all my exploring by foot and with Google Maps on my hand. I didn't mind, since I love walking. But when I learned the magic of Metro Cards, my life changed. Google maps is definitely my best friend, and maybe a good old subway map, in case my phone dies.

There's always something to do.

Most of all, there’s always something to do. It's the city that never sleeps: restaurants, bakeries, stores and other hidden gems can be found scattered all over the city as long as you look hard enough. If you’re like me, and you’ve watched many movies, I’m guessing most of them are filmed in New York City. I get excited when I spot a familiar destination either from Gossip Girl or Sex and The City.

It's never lonely.

In other big cities I’ve been to, I was always worried about exploring and walking by myself in the streets (I feel this way in Downtown Portland). But in New York City, I feel safe. I can literally be by myself, but feel as if I’m not alone. The streets are always busy. The people are always on a mission, so I have my space and can also do my own thing.

NYC is a (big) piece of American history.

New York City is basically a remnant of American history. The 9/11 memorial, Time Square, Grand Central Station, Central Park, Washington Square Park and other tourist areas attract people who are diverse. They are welcomed with acceptance.

It offers countless opportunities.

As an aspiring journalist, I figured that New York City would be the best place for me to visit. During my time there, I explored and toured many news corporations or publications. I even got the opportunity to watch a live news broadcast and see Trevor Noah! It was like a dream come true. No matter what you aspire to be in the future, I know New York City can open its doors for you. You just have to be strategic about it.

The buzzing and bustling the city does not bother me at all. Everyone around me is different in a variety of ways, which is where I feel like I belong. This is why I love New York City.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter
morethanwheels

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
