Why I Love Sharing My Birthday With A Holiday

Everyone's always down to party.

Why I Love Sharing My Birthday With A Holiday

In my mind, my birthday is like my own personal holiday. I mean, who doesn't enjoy a day that is all their own to celebrate getting one year older? I got lucky though, because my birthday is two holidays. Growing up, I always knew people who hated that their birthday fell on the same day as Christmas or New Year's or Valentine's Day. They always whined that they had to share the attention with something else, which to me just sounds spoiled. My birthday falls on Cinco de Mayo, and for as long as I can remember, I have embraced sharing my birthday with a fun holiday.

First of all, nobody ever forgets my birthday. My friends and family have named it "Cinco de Erica," "Cumplianos de Erica," and a plethora of other combinations between the holiday and my name. Every year when it comes around, I am guaranteed to be remembered by those who know me.

Another reason to embrace sharing your birthday with a holiday is that in general, people are always down to celebrate. May 5th always falls in the middle of finals, but I never have to worry about my friends not wanting to go out and celebrate with me because hey, it's a holiday! Everyday life seems to take the backseat to holidays; people want to momentarily forget about their obligations and celebrate the day. So I'm always luck to have my friends and family by my side.

Another upside — holiday themed parties. Growing up, I loved hosting parties with pinatas, sombreros, maracas, and lots and lots of Mexican themed decorations. All my friends did basic parties like bowling, movies, and pool parties. I got to do all of those with a an added holiday flair. Added bonus — this year is my 21st and they don't call it Drink de Mayo for no reason ...

Now I guess I'm a little biased, Cinco de Mayo isn't as big as Christmas or the Halloween where people may be tied to family obligations or their day gets upstaged by the commercialism of the holiday. Every year holiday seasons tend to get stretched out longer and longer, making it possible that your special day could slip under it all. That just means you get to celebrate your day even bigger and better than you have in the past to make it stand out!

To this day, I still know people who complain about their birthday falling on a holiday for many reasons; their day being overshadowed by a bigger, more important one, or not getting as many presents because holidays in general are more expensive. You would expect to hear those things from a 10-year-old, yet some college students still feel the same way. My advice to the those people: embrace it and enjoy it!

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
