Most of the people I went to high school with absolutely hated living in our town. I would often hear them talk about how they couldn't wait to get out and experience something different in a different city for college. Not me.
I know it's kind of lame to go to college in the same city you grew up in, but I couldn't pass up on the treasure that Hastings has: Hastings College. Hastings College is a fine school; there's nothing too special or crazy about it. Hastings College is your typical run-of-the-mill liberal arts school...and that's why I love it.
See, nothing against those who went to a university to get a business administration degree like the other majority of my generation, but I wanted something different. I wanted variety in my education.
Because I go to a liberal arts college I am forced to take classes that have nothing to do with my major, and it's great. As a marketing major, classes like philosophy, race and gender, and Native American life and culture (just to name a few) don't seem to have a lot to do wth my major. And that's how it should be.
I am getting a variety of knowledge from courses that range all across the academic spectrum, and although these classes seem odd to take with my major, later on in life they will prove useful because they taught me more than just the number crunching and target penetration methods of business classes. These classes taught me that knowledge, in any field, is an advantage.
